Observing the planet Earth

COSMO-SkyMed is a constellation of four X-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellites capalbe of all-time (day-nigth) and all-weather observations. It is the biggest space program ever carried out in Italy, developed by ASI in cooperation with the Ministry if Defense. In its complete configuration, the system is able to acquire up to 1800 images of the Earth's surface per day. No other system offer this combination of imaging capabilities. The four satellites have been successfully launched from Vandemberg, the first two on June 7 and Dicember 9, 2007, the third one on October 25, 2008 and the last one on November 5, 2010. The COSMO-SkyMed constellation is now completed and fully operational.
